Apfelwähe

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Since we didn’t have school on Friday I slept in and then I went to downtown with Marlen and Nele. We wanted to see if we could go kayaking on Saturday morning so we went to the beach.  It was amazing this cold rainy morning on the beach and we phoned the woman, who organizes the kayaking, and we spoke on her mail box. Afterwards all of us were freezing so we sat into the Tim Hortons (like Starbucks just from Canada) and had a hot coffee :) Our small visit at the mall came out very long and so we had to hurry up a bit if we still wanted to go to downtown. We ran in all directions and stopped everywhere. But in the end we were in downtown and visited Lululemon. My friends both haven’t been there so they were very excited and bought something right away. It already began to be darker and we still had to go to a supermarket for our supper ingredients. When we arrived there we first had to search everything and I planned to make an apple cake on Sunday so I had to buy all these different, uncommon ingredients in Canada. In the end I had everything.

  Kelowna beach in the morning

When we had to walk home from the bus station we were all very tired and I took us pretty long until we arrived at the house up the hill. First of all we were very hungry so we had to cook even though we were very tired. Our supper went out very good and while Nele and I were cooking Marlen began to bake a cheesecake. And this time the cake came out pretty well the next morning after a quite short night we went down to the supermarket, where the cheerleader were doing a fundraising again in the rain. I helped for a short time, but when I came home Jennifer from New Zealand was at our home again and since Peter wasn’t at home Tina cooked these things Peter doesn’t like but she really likes ;) .

As I said I was going to do a apple cake for the whole family and Tina even said that she’s going to make an exception of her diet for trying my cake :) Unfortunately I couldn’t get all the exact the same ingredients as in Switzerland, but approximately. The form of my cake wouldn’t be the same as at home. It round and about twice smaller, but we are going to eat it for dessert so that enough. After 30 min baking it looked pretty good except for the cake edge was a bit dark. After me Marina came into the kitchen. She was going to cook Japanese supper for the whole family. Her meal tasted very good and afterwards everyone liked my apple cake very much :) In the evening all of us were sitting in the living room watching TV together with a new tea.

Bottle drive

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

We were doing a bottle drive on Saturday morning. It was a fundraising for cheerleading and I did it even though I am not in the cheerleading team anymore. I just volunteered, because many friends of mine from the cheerleading team were doing it. Probably that was just the very social side of mine :)

In Switzerland we don’t usually do bottle drives so it was very new for me. We were about 30 cheerleaders and we had to spread out in groups of about three. Each group drove with a parent to a specific part of Rutland (Kelowna) and had to ring at the door of each house. I was with Marlen and we had a very nice father of a cheerleader, who drove us there. He has a very old car (26 years old) therefore his truck was a bit rusty, but we really enjoyed it, because it really reminded me of Bella’s car in twilight. The car has lots of space in the, but in the front Marlen and I had to squeeze us on the seat. We started with a empty truck and drove to the specific road. We ringed on each door and many of them had a huge bag full of bottles for us. But there were also many houses, which didn’t even open the door. After two hours on the same road the whole truck was full to the last millimeter and even more ;) When we came back to the bottle depot there most of the others were already there and sorting out the different cans, glass bottles, alcoholic drinks and more. All of us were working there until three o’clock. In the end we worked five hours even without lunch break.

 Marlen, I and the truck

In the evening Nele and Marlen came to my home and we had supper with Peter, Tina, Christine and Marina. The Spaghetti Bolognese were very good and Peter and Tina ate it too even though it actually isn’t in their diet. Christine just bought a new game: wii just dance 3. We had a lot of fun with it. We could dance duets!

On Sunday noon I met Christine and Tyler (her fiancé) and we went to the mall to cut my hair. I just cut a little bit and afterwards we had a cinnaroll, which was very gooood :) In the evening we watched ‘Battles of the Blades’, an entertaining show with duets of hockey players and figure skaters. Peter went fishing and he came home with a huge, dead fish..it looked pretty scary!

Sleepover

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Friday morning was choir time again ;) The whole 70-member choir was standing on the risers, but there was almost not enough space for all of us. The warm-up we had to do in the huge entrance hall and we did bit gymnastics :)

In both film tests that we got back I had an A! :D I was very proud. Friday afternoon a German girl (Nele) invited me and another girl (Marlen) to come to her homestay. At her home we sat on the hammocks and had a lot of fun (we ate some Swiss chocolate :) ) In the evening we baked a cheese cake! (Actually we wanted to bake a cheese cake :P ) But we forgot the egg yolk and when we took the cake out of the oven after one hour it was still liquid. In the end we found out that the temperature of the oven was Fahrenheit so first it was way too cold. Anyway after five hours in the oven it turned out very well! The Spaghetti Carbonara that we made was also very good.

Saturday afternoon I went the first day to the Kelowna mall with the two girls Nele and Marlen. Christine decided to join us so we were four girls storming the mall :) After we bought all our care items I finally had to buy a new cell phone. Afterwards we went to a lot of clothes shops. Our last shop was the American Eagle Shop! Just when I wanted to see if I have enough money I realized that I couldn’t find my wallet! Since it was almost 6 o’clock the employees said they will close the shop soon. I was so stressed but in the end I found out that my host sister Christine took it away when she left and we both didn’t know. When we wanted to go to the bus it turned out that we didn’t have enough coins for the bus ticket, because I didn’t have my wallet with me. But in the end a very kind man gave us the missing coins and we could get on the bus :) . So finally it was still a happy end!

Sunday morning Peter and Tina had to leave the house really early, because they had to drive to Penticton for a concert of Peter’s mother. So Christine and I did a nice bus tour through Kelowna in the afternoon. :) In the mall I picked up my clothes, which I wanted to buy the day before (but I didn’t have my wallet yesterday). On five o’clock we ate lunch at Christine’s place and she gave me some of her useful things she doesn’t need any more. Kindly, she also copied some of her music on my new cell phone. When we came home Peter and Tina were just finishing setting up the lower floor of the house therefore we helped them to finishing it.

Beach time

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Sunday morning was skype time! At midday Christine came to us and we decided to go to the beach. Marina couldn’t come, because she helped her friend and cooked for him (her curry was very good!) Peter was doing his passion today: he fished the whole day with a friend fishing. So Christine, Tina and I went to the Kelowna beach. It was a very sunny and warm day and we had a lot of fun with the air mattresses :)  although the water was pretty cold. We spent three hours there.

Afterwards we went to the lululemon shop in Kelowna city!

1. Weekend

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

On Thursday I had Film making (block C) in the morning with the teacher Mr. Applegath. He is very funny and a bit crazy ;) In the afternoon I had Math (block D) and it was a bit too easy. I think I will change it. In the afternoon I went to the Capital News Center (the big ice rink in Kelowna) and I met Jason, the coach.

On Friday I had English again (block A) and we got to know our classmates a little more. This evening Peter and Tina went to a movie and Marina and I had a nice TV-evening with ice cream :)

Saturday morning I had to get up pretty early, because Peter, Christine and me went to a farmers market on 8 o’clock and Peter said when we’re not going so early the market would be very busy. The market was very large and there were already many people. We bought some vegetables and Swiss bread from a Swiss/German bakery. When we came home we had brunch and in the afternoon Peter was painting the lower floor and I helped him. It was quite hard, but I had a lot of fun! :D Unfortunately Tina had to work this Saturday, but normally she doesn’t have to.

Swiss bread and sweet & salty popcorn :)

 hot air balloon

After supper Marina took her tinker stuff out and immediately Tina said that she loves to make cards and so we sat down, wrote post cards and glue a lot of little stickers on it. It was a lot of fun also because Marina has a very cool device with which we could print our photos right away.

Kelowna city

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Today my hostparents showed me Kelwona. First we drove up to a hill, where you can see a big part of Kelwona.

 the view from the hill

Afterwards we drove into the city and walked through it. It was very beautiful and hot. Once we ate in a restaurant , we went in a large ice cream bar just next to the restaurant. I bought a ‘kids ice cream’, which was huge!

  yammii :D

After that I was completely full. We met some very nice people and saw a lot of cute dogs. ;)

In the afternoon Peter took me into my new school (Rutland Senior School) and he showed me the whole area and the ice rink, because tomorrow it will be my first school day. I’m quite excited about that.. I will have an introduction with all the exchange students, but tomorrow I’ll just have school in the morning :)

Tonight Christine and her fiancé are going to cook supper for us.

Adventure: exchange year

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Friday morning we went to the Toronto airport pretty early, so we had a lot of time for eating lunch and talking. On 2.25 pm we wanted to board, but the flight had 15 minutes delay because of the weather (there was a storm). The problem was that we anyway just had 50 min to change the flights in Calgary. In the end we borded 55 min later and when we landed in Calgary our next flight has already departed two hours ago. So we searched an information point and they told us (we were four Swiss students) that there was no flight to Kelowna anymore on the same day. In this case they gave us the bording pass for the next day on 7 o’clock in the morning and a ticket for the hotel just next to the airport calls Delta (a very very beautiful hotel :) and everything for free) Then we wanted to pick up our baggage but it didn’t come. Therefore we had to ask the information desk again for the suitcases and they brought them individually. After that much trouble and stress we approved us a very fine dinner in the hotel restaurant. At 11 o’clock I was so tired that I even couldn’t value my own huge room ;)

 MY room in Delta

On the next day I had to get up really early (5.15 am) and we went to the airport where we boarded into a very small plane. We flew for a bit longer than an hour and in Kelowna airport Peter and Tina picked me up. They were very kind and they brought me to a very cute restaurant for breakfast.

 grizzly bear ;)

At home I met the Japanese student, Marina, who is very pleasant and gave me already a present and cooked the lunch for me. I also got to know the younger daughter of my hostparents, Christine. Aftewards Peter took Marina, Christine and me to a really hudge shopping center where everything you buy is at least five times bigger than normally. You can buy everything there, what you will ever need in your live!

They already sell christmas stuff :)

The Deroches have a very pretty house with a hudge garden and a lot of vegetables and fruit trees in it. Since Peter loves to cook, he’s grilling the spare ribs on his large BBQ for supper.
